Working here

We hire for judgment and writing before credentials, and associates do substantive work in their first month rather than their third year.

What we look for

Federal practice experience matters more to us than firm pedigree. Prosecutors, agency lawyers, committee counsel, judicial clerks, public defenders, and defense practitioners all arrive knowing something we need. So does anyone who can write a brief a busy judge can follow on the first read.

The other requirement is harder to screen for: the willingness to tell a client something they do not want to hear, early, in plain language. Lawyers who cannot do that are expensive to employ, because the bill for an unpleasant fact always comes due later and larger.

How we staff

Boutique size means associates take depositions, argue motions, draft comment letters that get filed under their own analysis, and sit in the room with the client rather than reading the memo afterward. It also means everyone handles their own administrative work. There is no layer of people beneath you.

Current openings

We do not have posted openings at this time. We do read unsolicited applications, and we hire from them — boutiques add attorneys when the right person appears rather than when a requisition opens. If your background fits the practices described on this site, write to us.

How to apply

Send three things to contact@judicialadvocatesus.com with "Application" in the subject line:

  • A résumé
  • A writing sample you drafted substantially yourself — a brief, a memo, a comment letter, an opinion you helped draft in chambers
  • A short note, no more than a page, about what you want to work on and why

Redact client-identifying and confidential information from your writing sample before you send it. Submitting an unredacted sample is itself a screening result, and not a favorable one. If a sample was substantially edited by someone else, say so — we would rather read honest B-plus work than wonder.

We acknowledge every application. If we are not moving forward, we say so rather than leaving you waiting.

Law students and clerks

We take a small number of law students and incoming clerks for project-based work during the academic year. These are paid positions involving real research on live matters. Apply the same way and note your graduation year and clerkship dates.
